Swansea, MA -- Lt. Robert M. Cabral, also known as "Officer Bob," "Manny" and "Egg," 52, of Old Providence Road, Swansea, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, in Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the father of Mitchell and Alec Cabral. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of the late Judith "Ma Ma" A. (Passero) Cabral and resided in Swansea for most of his life. A graduate of Case High School, class of 1971, and of Roger Williams University, he furthered his education by attending Providence College. Lt. Robert M. Cabral worked for the Swansea Police Department for the past 26 years as sergeant before he was promoted to lieutenant posthumously, and was also employed as a substitute teacher in Swansea Public Schools. While employed, he was an advocate for the DARE Program, teaching children the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Lt. Cabral attended numerous DARE conferences throughout the country for the past 10 years. His participation in all special events such as parades, Kids Day America, Cops N' Kids, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and many more were all awarded by letters of the committee and the public thanking him for his many accomplishments. He received the Enrique Camarena Award in 2001, a certificate of recognition from District Attorney Paul. F. Walsh Jr. for being "Swansea Hometown Hero Award" winner in 2003, and a Certificate of the DARE Distance Learning Program from DARE Elementary Training in 2004. Aside from the DARE program, Lt. Cabral was involved in Police and Community Partnering to reduce youth substance abuse. He was instrumental in tobacco compliance checks, alcohol stings, the Fresh Air Kid Program and Officer Phil Safety Program. He supported the Mark G. Hoyle Memorial Trust Committee for their annual road races. He was honored and loved by so many people that he was asked to speak at numerous elementary schools in Swansea as well as to the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Case Junior High School PTO and the Sisters of St. Anne's Solidarity at St. Louis de France Church. He was a loving father and good friend. He was a member of St. Dominic's Church, the Lions Club and the Swansea police softball team. Lt. Cabral was an assistant soccer coach for Case High School and Junior High School and for the Somerset and Swansea Recreation leagues. He was also a coach for Little League baseball and for the basketball team at Case Junior High School. He also made the time to enjoy the sports himself, playing Little League baseball for Swansea and football for Providence College. His was a die-hard New York Yankees and New York Giants fan. Survivors include his sons; two sisters, Josephine Lapre and her husband, David, of Warren, R.I., and Susan Shucker and her husband, Detective David, of Lawton, Okla.; a brother, Thomas Cabral and his wife, Sharon, of Boston; a half-sister, Meagan Cabral of Lawton, Ohio; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; two uncles and an aunt; and several cousins. His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Thursday in St. Dominic's Church, 1277 GAR Highway, Swansea. Burial will in Mount Hope Cemetery, Swansea. Arrangements are by Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Birchcrest, 189 Gardner's Neck Road, Swansea. |
